Trace a missing price
Trace a missing price in a risk report back to its data feed before you trust the output.
Career profile
Financial risk specialists estimate possible losses from unpaid debts or market swings, then suggest protections.
A profitable investment can still hide serious risk. Your job is to test what happens to it when conditions turn bad.

Trace a missing price in a risk report back to its data feed before you trust the output.

Tweak one risk model's interest-rate assumption, then compare projected losses showing how a market downturn hits each investment.

In model-risk roles at banks, check whether growing forecast misses come from changed data, assumptions or markets.

Walk a trader through one spreadsheet chart showing where losses could pile up, then discuss cutting that exposure.

Quick orientation
Finance or a related field is common preparation.
Annual wages for financial risk specialists; the hourly median is $56.41.
About 4,800 openings per year are projected nationally, including replacement hiring.
Software can pull financial data and run statistical tests. Some investment-risk teams use Python, a programming language, to build these analyses.
You still need to decide whether a model fits the decision and explain where its assumptions could fail.
How much analysis newer artificial intelligence tools can take over depends partly on whether their outputs can be checked reliably and controlled in actual financial decisions.
Pay in context
Use the national median as a comparison point, not an expected first salary.
In May 2025, financial risk specialists had median wages of $117,330 a year, or $56.41 an hour. The 10th-percentile wage was $64,820 and the 90th-percentile wage was $196,110. These describe the full occupation, not beginner and senior pay bands.
Median annual wages were $133,070 in securities, commodity contracts, and other financial investments and related activities, compared with $105,570 in insurance carriers and related activities. Moving industries does not guarantee that difference.
Employment is projected to grow 7.4% from 2025 to 2035, with about 4,800 openings annually. Openings include replacing people who leave the occupation, as well as new jobs.
Degree study and employer training often connect: you build the foundation in college, then learn a particular business’s risks on the job.
After entry
This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization.
Learn your employer’s risk framework and turn financial analysis into work your colleagues can use.
Build skill in stress tests—calculations for difficult scenarios—and learn to spot weaknesses in the models behind them.
Develop deeper expertise in a market or investment strategy, or move to a risk team covering a different business.
You work with deal teams and people inside and outside the bank. Credit analysis connects with negotiations over deal documents and the risks the bank will accept.
Your close partners are portfolio managers. Risk teams provide an independent challenge to investment assumptions, using portfolio analytics to weigh potential losses against investment goals.
Try it
Make a spreadsheet for a fictional $10,000 portfolio split between two investments. Assume one falls 20% and the other 5%; calculate the loss, then change the split. Write two sentences explaining what improved and which assumption could be wrong. Notice whether you enjoy both the calculation and defending its limits.
Stay safe: Use invented investments and no real money.
