Plan the hotel's cleaning order
Rank rooms using the status report, and update housekeepers and the front desk when one falls behind.
Career profile
Housekeeping supervisors lead cleaners, divide tasks, and check that rooms or whole buildings are usable.
The next shift is arriving and a space needs cleaning again. Help the crew finish properly and hand over a list of what's left.

Rank rooms using the status report, and update housekeepers and the front desk when one falls behind.

After housekeeping, flag a skipped spot, arrange a second pass, then release the room to the front desk.

Operate the powered cleaner while they watch, and explain its upkeep clearly enough to follow next shift.

Scan stock records, order supplies before anything runs out, and review hours so your manager spots staffing gaps.

Quick orientation
Typical preparation is a high school diploma or equivalent plus related work experience. Employers set their own requirements.

Projected national employment growth from 2025 to 2035 for housekeeping and janitorial supervisors combined.
In buildings that use them, robotic floor scrubbers can follow taught routes. Staff prepare the space and respond when the machine needs help.
You still inspect results, coach workers and decide how to respond to complaints.
How much floor work shifts to robots depends partly on the building: tight turns, obstacles and changing traffic can require route changes or human help.
Pay in context
The May 2025 national median was $49,100 a year, or $23.61 an hour. That is the middle of employee wages across housekeeping and janitorial supervision, not a starting salary.
In May 2025, the 10th-percentile annual wage was $35,520 and the 90th-percentile wage was $76,430. These are wage percentiles, not starting and senior salaries.
In May 2023, average annual pay was $46,220 in traveler accommodation, $48,970 in services to buildings and dwellings, and $56,040 in general medical and surgical hospitals. These historical averages are not current offers.
About 30,800 openings per year are projected for 2025–2035, including replacement needs. The projected 3.2% growth does not mean every opening is a newly created position.
Cleaning experience is a common foundation. A supervisor job usually adds responsibility for other workers, so look closely at the experience requirements before choosing a course.
After entry
This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization.
Learn your site's inspection standards and how to leave a clear handoff when the next shift takes over.
Get better at spotting recurring staffing and supply problems, then bring your manager a workable change to the schedule or order.
A possible next step is custodial operations manager: overseeing supervisors across buildings and managing budgets, staffing plans and contracts. Additional experience or education may be required.
Room turnover connects your crew to the front desk and laundry. You track which rooms are ready and pass unfinished issues to the next shift.
Your crew may cover several buildings, from classrooms to fitness spaces, and help set up events. Some campus teams clean overnight, with supervisors moving between buildings to check progress.
Try it
On paper, give a three-person cleaning crew six rooms to finish before an event. Decide who handles each room and when you will inspect it. Then remove one worker from the plan and revise it. Notice whether sorting priorities and explaining changes interests you.
