Career profile

Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical engineers design machines and their parts, then check that they work as intended.

A design can look right yet bend more than it should, so you use math, drawings and test results to choose the changes it needs.

A mechanical engineer tests a small mechanism with a colleague.

A day in the life

1A mechanical engineer checks a mechanism's mounting clearance while a customer indicates the load it must carry, then records testable requirements.

Turn a client request into specs

Ask the client what the mechanism must hold and where it must fit, then write testable requirements.

2The engineer models a bracket in CAD and checks its predicted bending under the expected load.

Model a bracket and check strength

Draw the bracket in computer-aided design (CAD) software and calculate whether it can take the expected load.

3The engineer compares measured bracket bending with a prediction and sketches a stronger rib before repeating the test.

Reshape the bracket after measuring

Check the measured numbers against your prediction, and reshape and retest the piece if it flexes too far.

4The engineer and two manufacturing colleagues check a bracket's hole spacing against its drawing and update the design record.

Settle dimensions with manufacturing

Walk through the drawing with manufacturing coworkers, settle questions about dimensions, then revise the design record.

Things to weigh

  • Much of the work happens at a desk, even when the product is a machine.
  • Design revisions take patience, and some jobs extend beyond a 40-hour week.

Where AI may help

Some design software can propose lighter or stiffer part shapes within limits you set. This is called generative design.

What people still lead

You choose the requirements and manufacturing limits, then evaluate whether the proposed design solves the actual problem.

What we can’t predict yet

How much shape development will shift to software remains uncertain; it depends partly on how well the real problem can be captured in those limits.

Median and spread

The median was $104,110 a year, or $50.05 an hour. The annual 10th and 90th percentiles were $73,990 and $164,340. These describe the wage distribution, not beginner and senior pay.

Getting started

Earn a mechanical engineering degree

What the route involves
Study math, science, and engineering design in a bachelor’s program.
What it can lead to
Meet the typical educational preparation for mechanical engineering jobs.

Take an applied technology degree

What the route involves
Complete a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering technology, applying engineering to materials, production, and product development.
What it can lead to
Prepare for mechanical and product engineering roles that accept this degree.
What to check
If you want professional licensure later, check your state board’s degree requirements before enrolling.

Entry-level jobs generally do not require professional licensure.

After entry

Career paths

This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization. This path also has a credential or licensing boundary; see the requirements and limits.

  1. Get established

Learn to check a component’s drawing against its requirements.

  2. Carry a change through

Take a design revision from analysis through testing and production.

  3. Lead a technical area

Build toward leading mechanical design on a project, coordinating other disciplines and reviewing technical decisions.

    • Specialize in developing test facilities and mentoring laboratory engineers.

Where you can work

Building design consultancies

Coordinate heating, cooling, and ventilation designs with electrical and structural engineers. Available space, building codes, and client budgets constrain your choices.

  • Office
  • Indoors

Product testing laboratories

In heating and cooling equipment labs, you can develop test facilities and troubleshoot their hardware and software alongside laboratory and product-development teams.

Try it

See whether the job clicks before you commit to the path.

Make a folded-paper stand for an empty paper cup. Sketch it, predict where it will buckle, and add coins one at a time. Change one fold and repeat. Notice whether you enjoy explaining the result and improving the design.

Stay safe: Keep the test on a table and use only small loads.
