Career profile

Mechatronics Engineer

Mechatronics engineers design machines whose moving parts, sensors and control software work together.

A machine keeps stopping just past its mark. Which do you change: the mechanism, its sensor, or the commands driving its motion?

A day in the life

1An engineer compares position sensors and checks whether one fits beside a stationary linear carriage.

Choose a position sensor

Compare position sensors, then check where one could mount so the controller knows the moving part's true location.

2An engineer models a mechanical assembly on a computer and checks its part drawings for fabrication.

Draw parts that fit together

You model the assembly in SolidWorks first, then produce drawings so the machine shop makes accurate, well-fitting parts.

3An engineer adjusts motor control logic and compares an overshooting response with a revised test run.

Write and tune motor logic

Test the motor logic, and when the mechanism overshoots, retune the response and compare against the previous run.

4An engineer compares a completed instrument’s test results with its performance requirements and records a calibration change while a coworker checks the fixture.

Test the finished instrument

Check the built instrument against its required performance, and record any assembly or calibration changes before retesting.

Fit, tradeoffs & changing tools

Things to weigh

  • There is substantial screen and documentation time alongside work with equipment.
  • Development deadlines can force decisions before you have every answer; you still need to explain the risks and test your choices.

Where AI may help

Simulation lets robotics teams compare motion before building hardware. Some teams also seek experience with artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistants.

What people still lead

You decide what performance matters and whether the results justify changing the design.

What we can’t predict yet

How much software can take over depends partly on whether its model captures the machine's real behavior.

Earnings

Experience, qualifications, and location can affect your offer. Compare base salary separately from stock, sign-on payments, and benefits.

National pay context

The broader Engineers, All Other group had a 2025 median of $122,930 a year, or $59.10 an hour. The lowest-paid 10% earned $66,810 or less; the highest-paid 10% earned $189,950 or more. These figures cover several engineering specialties, not mechatronics alone, and do not describe starting and senior salaries.

Pay across workplace types

For the same broader engineering group, May 2023 average annual wages were $107,360 in architectural, engineering, and related services and $134,050 in scientific research and development services. This historical comparison mixes specialties and experience levels; it does not show what a mechatronics engineer would gain by switching workplaces.

Experienced warehouse-robotics development

In North Reading and Westboro, Massachusetts, Amazon Robotics advertises $117,300–$160,000 a year in base pay for a mechatronics role requiring at least five years of relevant experience. Stock and sign-on payments are separate. This is a range for that role, not starting pay.

Getting started

Earn a mechatronics engineering degree

What the route involves
Study mechanical systems, electronics, digital controls, and programming in a bachelor's program.
What it can lead to
Preparation for engineering work designing automation systems across several industries.

Connect mechanical engineering to electronics

What the route involves
Earn a mechanical engineering bachelor's degree and build projects that include sensors, circuits, and programming.
What it can lead to
A degree background accepted for mechatronics instrument-design roles, with projects that demonstrate integration skills.
What to check
Check experience requirements separately; a suitable degree does not qualify you for every advertised role.

You can study the combined field directly or build toward it from mechanical engineering.

After entry

Career paths

This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization.

  1. Get established

Learn the product through its drawings and assembly records. Build confidence running tests that another engineer can repeat.

  2. Own an integrated component

Take a motor-and-sensor assembly from design through testing, resolving problems where its mechanical and control parts meet.

  3. Specialize in robot motion

Develop deeper motion-analysis skills and take responsibility for larger design tradeoffs with customers and other engineers.

Where you can work

Warehouse-robotics development

Work with hardware and software engineers on robots headed for deployment. Simulation, customer requirements, and coordination with equipment suppliers shape the design.

  • Office

Medical-device manufacturing equipment

Build equipment used to make surgical robots. Onsite production support sits alongside formal design reviews, risk analysis, and tests showing the equipment performs consistently.

  • Indoors

Try it

See whether the job clicks before you commit to the path.

Sketch a tabletop machine that moves a block to a marked spot. Label the motor, position sensor, and controller. Write what it should do if the block stops short or goes too far. Notice whether connecting the mechanism to its feedback interests you.

Stay safe: Keep this a paper exercise; no powered equipment is needed.
