Shampooer

Shampooers shampoo and rinse clients' hair, then reset the basin for whoever's next.

Getting clients comfortable before their stylist appointment is one way to try salon work. It may suit hands-on people who enjoy dealing with clients.

Salon shampooer washes a customer’s hair at a basin.

A day in the life

1A shampooer checks running water on her wrist and adjusts the temperature beside a relaxed customer with a towel protecting his shoulders.

Drape a towel, test the water

Place a towel to protect the client's clothes, ask how the water feels, and change it if needed.

2A shampooer lifts sections of a reclining customer's hair while rinsing conditioner into the basin.

Lather and rinse the hair

You work the stylist's chosen shampoo and conditioner through the client's hair, then rinse them out with water.

3A shampooer wipes an empty shampoo basin, with shampoo and conditioner refill supplies ready on a nearby trolley.

Disinfect and restock the basin

Once each client is done, disinfect the basin and top up the shampoo and conditioner.

4A shampooer folds freshly laundered towels beside salon laundry machines and shelves of clean towel stacks.

Do the towel laundry

Wash and fold the towels so a client's wash is never held up by a shortage.

Things to weigh

  • You spend much of the day standing and repeating hand movements.
  • Some jobs require weekends, holidays, or extra hours during busy seasons.

Where AI may help

Appointment and inventory software can help organize bookings and track supplies.

What people still lead

You still handle the wash and respond when a customer says the water feels wrong.

What we can’t predict yet

As salon systems change, the balance between basin work and digital scheduling or stock tasks may shift.

These wage estimates include tips but exclude overtime premiums. Fewer paid hours mean less annual income at the same hourly rate. Ask how the salon handles tips and whether quoted pay includes them.

Getting started

Learn in a shampooer job

What the route involves
Apply for shampooer or shampoo-assistant work and learn the salon’s washing and upkeep routines from its staff. Some employers ask for a high school diploma or equivalent.
What it can lead to
You build experience serving customers and supporting stylists without necessarily completing cosmetology school first.
What to check
In Texas, shampooing and conditioning do not require a license, but coloring and styling do. Check your state’s rules for every service the job includes.

Prepare for broader salon work

What the route involves
If styling is also your goal, pursue your state’s cosmetology route. In Texas, complete 1,000 hours at a licensed school, pass written and practical exams, and apply for a Cosmetology Operator license at age 17 or older.
What it can lead to
Cosmetology preparation is preferred for some shampoo-assistant jobs. Earning the Texas license also permits broader services such as styling and coloring.
What to check
This is broader preparation than Texas requires for shampooing alone. Other states set their own requirements.

Check the actual duties before choosing training: shampoo-only work and broader hair services can have different legal requirements.

After entry

Career paths

This starts where the entry routes leave off: early work, growing capability, and advancement or specialization.

  1. Build a reliable routine

Get consistent at preparing customers and keeping towels and work areas ready when stylists need them.

  2. Learn the products

Build enough product knowledge to explain the shampoo or conditioner being used.

  3. Move toward styling

If you want to style or color hair, pursue the required cosmetology qualification. Shampooer experience can inform that choice, but it does not replace licensing steps.

Where you can work

Hair salon

You may support several stylists and help keep the color area ready, including cleaning bowls. Jobs can be part-time or full-time.

  • Indoors
  • Physical demands

Combined salon and day spa

Your support work can extend beyond the hair department: laundry may include spa robes and linens as well as salon towels.

  • Physical demands

Try it

See whether the job clicks before you commit to the path.

Ask a salon whether you can observe one shampoo service. Notice how the worker checks comfort and resets the basin afterward. Would you enjoy repeating that careful routine for different people?

Stay safe: Get permission from both the salon and the customer before observing.
